The Science of Healthy Garden Beds

A stunning landscape doesn't happen by accident. When we perform a property cleanup or garden bed restoration, we focus heavily on the underlying health of the environment. One of our most critical services is professional mulching. Mulch does far more than just look pretty; it acts as an essential insulator for the soil. A proper two-to-three-inch layer of premium hardwood mulch regulates the ground temperature, locking in moisture during the scorching summer days and actively breaking down to provide rich organic matter to the root systems of your shrubs and flowers.

Pruning, Trimming, and Plant Health

Bushes and shrubs that are left to grow wildly do not just look messy; they actually become unhealthy. Overgrown branches block sunlight and fresh air from reaching the center of the plant, which creates a dark, damp environment that is an absolute magnet for fungal diseases and spider mites. Our landscaping service includes expert, selective pruning. We carefully thin out the interior deadwood and shape the exterior canopy. This allows the plant to breathe, directs the plant's energy into producing vibrant new blooms, and keeps your property lines looking incredibly sharp and intentional.

Complete Property Cleanups

Whether you are recovering from a long, messy winter or preparing your yard for the heavy growth of summer, a massive property cleanup is an exhausting chore. We deploy fast, highly efficient crews to execute deep cleanups across Lewiston, ME. We rake out deeply embedded leaves, extract dead annuals, pull invasive weeds from the root base, and haul away all the organic debris. We give your yard a perfect blank slate, resetting the aesthetic of your property in a single afternoon.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • When is the best time of year to put down fresh mulch? The ideal time to install fresh mulch is in the mid-to-late spring, right after the soil has warmed up but before the heavy heat of summer sets in. This establishes a strong weed barrier for the growing season and instantly refreshes the look of your yard.
  • Will you pull the weeds before you put the mulch down? Absolutely. We never just throw mulch over the top of existing weeds. Doing so just gives the weeds a nice, warm blanket to grow under! We meticulously clear the beds, pull the weeds by the root, and prep the soil before a single scoop of mulch is laid down.
  • What is the difference between landscaping and lawn care? Landscaping generally refers to the design, installation, and maintenance of the non-grass elements of your yard—like the garden beds, the mulch, the planting of shrubs, and the pruning of bushes. Lawn care specifically focuses on the agronomy and health of the actual turfgrass (fertilizing, aerating, and weed control).
  • Can you trim branches that are rubbing against the siding of my house? Yes, and you absolutely must! Shrubs or branches that physically rub against your home trap intense moisture against your siding, leading to severe wood rot, and they provide a direct "highway" for ants and spiders to march right into your house. We will expertly trim the canopy back to create a safe, healthy clearance zone around your foundation.

Lewiston, ME Insights: Population,
Zip Codes, Influence, and Service Areas

The Lewiston area traces its roots to 1669 with the early presence of the Androscoggin tribe (the namesake of the county in which the city resides). In the late 18th century, in 1795, Lewiston was incorporated as Lewistown. The presence of the Androscoggin River and Lewistown Falls made the town an attractive area for manufacturing and hydro-power businesses. The rise of Boston rail and textile tycoon Benjamin Bates saw rapid economic growth rivaling that of Cambridge, Worcester, and Concord. Irish immigrants were recruited to build the railroad links and dig the canals for the textile mills. The Irish stayed, and worked the mills and established flourishing businesses, as evidenced by the McGillicuddy, Callahan, and other Blocks and the St.Joseph's and St.Patrick's churches. In the 1850 Census Lewiston was fully 23% Irish born. The increase in economic stimulus prompted thousands of Quebecers to migrate, causing a population boom; the populace rose from 1,801 in 1840 to 21,701 in 1890. In 1855, local preacher Oren Burbank Cheney founded the Maine State Seminary, the first coeducational university in New England and one of the first universities to admit black students before the Emancipation Proclamation. Lewistown quickly became associated with the liberal arts and was incorporated as "Lewiston" in 1864, a year before the college was chartered as Bates College.
